                          importing into Ireland

If you are importing food into Europe it has to be suitable for human consumption and also comply with the EU law on importing food. If you are importing meat into Ireland you must be registered to an agency. When you are bringing food into Europe or any other country it has to go through border inspection. If the food does not pass the border inspection. They will take samples to be sent to scientists, when the results come back if the food if illegal most likely it will be destroyed and if it is legal they will be returned to the owner. The border inspection posts in Ireland are in Shannon Airport and Dublin Port. The food must be wrapped correctly and have a health mark on it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=wxAif4Vwm8E I found a really interesting video about the food that they import in Canada.they talk about how Canada imports a large amount of food but they export a smaller amount to other countries .you may think that they are importing food that they grow in exotic countries but its not they import food such as tomatoes. so check it out
In Ireland we export many animal products to different countries around the world , we even ship alive animals to the U.K.
For the production of wheat and other cereals we need different machines to cut and grind the cereals so we can sell them to other countries.

These Machines that are used in this process are imported from other countries
When we buy food in the supermarket, we usually buy it packaged. The packaging comes from different countries and then they are all sent to the factory and packaged.

  • In the supermarkets you can buy food from all around the world. You can get chocolate from Colombia and cheese from England. Most meat in the supermarkets nowadays are from Ireland but if you go to Spain you will find that they eat a lot of Irish lamb and if you go to France you will find that they use a lot of Irish beef.
  •  Even in the making and growing of food you will find that geography plays a huge part in it. If you grow food in pots the pots you are growing them in have traveled half way around the world and then you buy them in your garden center.
  • Even the places where you store your food have been made and designed in a different country e.g. you may own a fridge from Switzerland.
  •  The exporting of food is a huge part of a countries economy as countries will pay a huge amount of money for a food that they don’t have or grow e.g. Ireland pay a lot of money each year for bananas because they don’t have the right climate to grow them in.

WHAT IS FOOD :food is anything we eat and provides nutrients for the body. The food we eat is usually from an animal or plant. the nutrients we need in our body are fat. protein, carbohydrates, minerals , vitamins. food is very important for giving us energy during the day.

HOW WE GOT FOOD IN THE PAST AND HOW WE GET IT NOW : in the past people used to get food by hunting wild animals and collecting berries and nuts and others used to farm their own crops such as barley and farm animals such as cows.Nowadays we can go down to the shop or supermarket to buy all or the food we need !
DIFFERENT MEALS IN THE DAY : we have three main meals in the day. these are breakfast, lunch and dinner. we eat breakfast in the morning usually around 7 - 8 . a lot of people eat cereals and toast for breakfast  . we would then have lunch at about 1:30 we would usually have a sandwich  and then dinner from 6- 8 which is the biggest meal and the food we eat varies from family to family.
